A single-herb liquid extract of dried plant material of Bolboschoenus fluviatilis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

River bulrush is a sedge of shallow water and marsh margins, with sharply three-angled stems, long keeled leaves and clusters of brown spikelets held among leafy bracts. It runs by rhizomes and makes hard rounded corms at intervals along them, and those corms are what is dug and dried. There is an important naming point about this material — see the warnings.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Names overlap on this material. The San Leng of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is Sparganium stoloniferum, a burr reed; this listing is Jing San Leng, the corm of a river bulrush, which is a different plant traded under a similar name. Check which one you are buying. Not for use in pregnancy — the San Leng group has a long record of use as uterine stimulants — and it may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines.
